we are wanting to know a ballpark timetable for training our female

by duke1965 on 08 May 2011 - 13:05

depends on the dog , the trainer , and the people who help you , but rougly spoken it must be possible to get a  BH at 18 and schh 1 by the time a dog is 20 to 24  months , assuming you start out your basics from puppyhood

also depends if you want passing points or decent points in your book

by brynjulf on 09 May 2011 - 16:05

2-5 months if you send out to a professional. ( I STILL havent figured out how the Germans can do this but they can!)  Usually about 1 year for most people at a club.

by duke1965 on 09 May 2011 - 20:05

brynjulf , I know how they can , I ve seen it happen , how many people that send their dog to be titled actually trail their dogs afterwards and see what the dog really knows , so that timetable is not realistic to anyone who wants to really train their dogs to a title

Duke :)  are you saying they come back from Germany with a fake Sch 1 ( she batts her eyes) LOL

by duke1965 on 11 May 2011 - 19:05

lets say trained to pass , but thats another level than someone training their own dog to get nice points in the book

Byrn -- you are correct  !!..in Sch .... it is not unreasonable at all ,by no means ,  with someone that knows what they are doing and with a reasonably good dog with the potential to have the Sch 1 in 90 days !! however , qualified , that is a decent dog and a good trainer . especially staring off a puppy , most don't know how much can be done ... again qualified, rearing a pup , teaching it in correct fashinon , ie. start tracking 8, 10 . 12 weks , ptotection skills , , imprinting the exercies / routine of the obedience prortion , Heavens , the dog could be ready already at even before 1 year old !! even though you must by the ' book criteria' trial AD BH SCH at certain ages ... , that does not mean , even a good showline /working line it couldn't be done in a year . let alone a  mature dog 90 days !!!! - [   byrn i gave in a little more than your 2 mos. :-}  but no argument here ] . Lord /// i want people to go to the belgium /french mondio ring sports web sities and sdee what these dogs are doing at 6 months , granted a malinois is a different breed . i had mals too , but come on ,, the GSD is not that far off the mark ..we are nnot talking golden retrievers here,  i had several GSDs , show lines , good ones in the past that did Sch and Ring exercises !! Good question / thread .. maybe this will be an eye opener for others ... and this  relates to another thread on the PDB ..?? how much money people spend to title their dogs / costs per sessions ... $$ a lot less if you titled in 90 days compared to 1-2 years now isn't it ??

by ALPHAPUP on 11 May 2011 - 23:05

rickshot -- forgive me .. i did not address you , as i would people that woedrk with  me ... my last post were for readers .. this post is for you [not knowing your dog / experience /your helper] SO..:  the Sch 1.        BH  takes ... as long as it takes !!

by brynjulf on 12 May 2011 - 19:05

Rickshot,
i keep looking to find a thread not to long ago.  one of the forum members sent a pup to Germany and she was titled in 2 months.  I thought maybe they could be of help to you. Alas i can not find that thread.

It is okay to get these titles early with a Young Dog and yes it can be done without much trouble But if you get around a lot of events like i do you will see some of these same young Dogs burnt out at 2 to 3 years old, They did the job but did not have the Fun of growing up whist doing it, they get no puppy hood It is push push and pressure to get titles at an early age,
Many times i have seen very good young dogs messed up by the above, Would you get your Kid who has just started a Junior school and say i want you to be up to this standard in X amount of time No' i would not think you would
The old saying is Those in Haste go no Where
And regards young dogs getting titles at a young age in Germany very quickly
No problem as above BUT the difference is when they get home and the owner wants to continue getting higher titles the Dog has not really worked with the Owner and the Owner does not know the methods used for getting a quick SchH1 with there dog that makes a huge difference. Yet the Germans are run down by Duke so let the Guys on here know how the Germans do or do not do it. You have voiced it so speak up, It would be interesting to know the Venues of such clubs where this takes place and see for myself. A Puppy is but a Puppy once let it live the life of a Puppy and do a little work along the way a puppy learns every day, Not go for a quick Title just so you can say my Dog got this and that and it is only just over so and so of age,
That will not impress any real Dog people quite the opposite, The only thing it will do is to boost the Handlers EGO but possibly mess up a good prospect . Do not do it, but every one to there own
