I have a 10 weeks old GSD W/L pup....I love her she's so great.  I'm training her the very best I can.  I have 2 dogs and I'm pretty proud of my 3 years old, he is so well mannered....the 10 weeks old pup is doing very well. I hand feed her so she is going very fast in her training.  Come, sit, down, stay...she is just amazing.
Today, as we were having dinner, I put my pup in her crate....and my husband ask me why the pup was in her crate "again".  I told him I was training her so I didn't want her to run free all over the house.  He told me my dog really have "a dog life"....it sound pretty negative....
My question is : Do you too crate train your pups ?

Yes. I have 3 grown dogs here and a 5 month old puppy. They are all crate trained. The older dogs I don't crate at night or when I leave to go shopping or whatever. But the puppy I do. Why? Because even tho she is a good puppy she is still a puppy that likes to get into things, chew cords , dump water. I do it for her own safety more than anything. The water dumping isn't a big deal but the cord chewing is. She is tall enough she can easily stand at the counter and she has broken glasses and an ashtray once. She can also take the lid off the trash can and I would be sick if she got into sharp bones of a broken piece of glass. Also it helps housebreak them faster. If your puppy has to go to the vet for overnight or even just stay for the day it is a lot easier all the way around if they will just automatically go into a crate or cage or run. Also I have found my dogs like to go in their crates and sleep.  I feed mine in their crates so there is no disagreements about whose food is whose. So I don't think it's cruel for a dog to be crate trained and there will be times when yo9u're definately glad you did so. JMO.

All my dogs are crate trained.  The crate is the dog's own space, and my son and his friends were told never to bother the dogs when they went in their crates (we leave them open so the dogs can go in  or out when they want).  The crate is also a "time out"/"turn off the dog" space as well.  When I want my dogs to turn off (they are working dogs and want to do things all the time, including creating their own entertainment when bored) I place them in their crate without any drama and usually their crate toy of a Kong with peanut butter inside.  I NEVER use the crate as punishment.  I feed them in their crates so it is also a place for food.  I have one dog that is very creative in creating his own entertainment so he goes into his crate if I am going away for any duration, I give him his Kong with peanut butter inside to keep him busy.  I used it for them as puppies as well when I knew I would be busy and not able to keep a close eye on them.  Why set them up for getting into mischief when I could easily place them in their crate with a toy or such to keep them busy until I was free to keep an eye on them again?  I believe crate training is a must for dogs and never a form of punishment.

Right there with you Mindhunt, ESPECIALLY for the working dog. Traveling, hotels/motels, at someone elses house etc.
