alboe hmmm. i imagine one can philosophize there .. but i will state : we and our dogs are so literally lightening fast .    the responses in our brains are so fast that even we don't pick up on our own responses.. we are as innate in behaviors as canines and vice a verse.  as i have been expounding upon  the notion , that  it is essential to watch , be the dog in it's essence.  because the switch [ again if i bite my lip and use the lingo of others] from prey to defense , from defense to prey can be so extaordiary fast [ microseconds] that it can be so easily missed. IMO if you are the trainer, helper, owner i think if one puts things in life into categoricals you will see many a mistake.. i have seen countless dogs ruined - and IMO all that need to be done is simply think .. what is the dog feeling , motivated .. why is the dog doing what it is doing etc.. i have seen a number of dogs ruined , just ruined then sold because of poor training. ya people that claimed they had 20+ years trainging protection,  ruin dogs.
i had a new friend who did helper work 22 years , just started to see this guy work my friend's dog .. he appproeached this 20 wek dog [czech line] face on, came in gave the bite. . ok .. i watched . my friend , ya .. he handled his dogs for years,,, thought he knew it all too [ another one of those]. as the dog was being worked he said in a whispering voice , ' watch him .\, watch him".  i turned to another sitting next to me and i prolaimed " they work the dog like this it will be ruined". afterwards ther helper got in my face and said heard you .[ agian handler /helper both have enormous influence]
the lowdown. they thought they were building the dog's confidence.they thought  the dog looked &  was doing great .. BUT in a twinkling of a split second .. i recognized that the dog wasn't. first : the whisper ... that gave the dog the notion something was wrong , out of sync , something was there the dog should be wary of . now the dog becomes stressed thinking , what do i have to be conceared about. now the frontal veiw combined with that : pressure on a 20 week pup[ how do you think this pup truely felt?].. they were asking a 20 week dog to go to battle.if you were a dad would you ask your 6 year old to fight your battles?.
i say genetics and experience/learning cones into a duality of influence working the dog . amoung other facors . Bottom line , this dog became highly insecure , extraordinarily in defense , 1 year later had the worst bite i ever saw , the belgiums at a pre-trail couldn't even get the dog to bite !! at 2 years the owner had to sell the dog , became a danger to his kids and out the window as far as sport . i can't stress enough the lifetime of damage / permanent damage that can be done with poor defense training and inappropriately substituting it for prey when not called for or done incorrectly .. one better be able in a blink of an eye & at any specific moment to understand the behavior and the dog , itself !!

forgot to add ... for curiosity .. if one is thinking how fast our mental synapsis and out emotional states come into fruition ... literally  almost [ if not ] as fast a lightening , almost , the speed of light itself .. be careful working or having your dogs worked in defense ! yes ,, and i am talking about a physiological / biological bevavioral respose - ad nauseum , not evetyhting can be as it seems especially switching from one emotional state to another !!

dogs have been domesticated for 10 thousand years so i agree it is a bit silly to compare them to wolves now

i have seen a lot of wolves up close if u ever get the chance u will so how strange and wierd they are compared to dogs

but a few lil things are still the same but i agree with jeff it is not enough to compare the two wolves are better compare to true wild predatory animals dogs are not in the same boat JMHO

u will see it in feral dog packs

domestic cats on the other hand have not stray as far as domesti cdogs have from their wild counterparts domestic cats are like 6 thousand years old? they go feral a lot and often act a look a lot like their wild counterpart (african wild cat) yet still feral cats are not the same they form colony which true wild cats will never do

i hvae seen coyote wolf mix near my house all the time lots around my city they look at usand my dog as alien species and my dog looks at them as some wierd alien animal however when she sees a dog walking by she recogizes it
