It sounds like Kennel Pak is issuing policies only to commercial kennels (and maybe vet hospitals) that are not on the same property as a home. Since Dan is a GSD person, it wouldn't hurt to ask him. He lives in NY now and can be contacted directly via his web site. Google Darby-Dan if you're interested. Last I heard from him he travels to York every week, so you could leave him a message at that office, I'm sure it would be forwarded to him. Vom Brunhaus you said a mouthful. Frankly I hadn't thought of it in that way. I'll bet you are right about renters, etc..

We are in North Carolina and use Farm Bureau here. While they do have a list of dogs they will not cover (each state is different), it does not include GSDs.

vomlandholz Is farmbureau for just "farms"(forgive the wording)? My friend has a breeding(horses)farm and uses them but I was under the impression that they covered that type of property, not suburban areas.I'm assuming too that they don't go by the county dog lists(you know, Lee has one, Marion has another, and so on).

State Farm and Great American have breed restrictions but GSDs are not on the list.  State Farm asks if your dogs have been protection trained.  The agent told us sport training like Sch wasn't PP training but I don't know how it would be if push came to shove.

Kennel Pak and other Kennel underwriters will NOT insure property where the kennel is located on the same property as the house. Other insurers will not insure kennels who also conduct obedience training. Other insurers will not insure if someone does Schutzhund work on their property. The bottom line is that unless and until you ask about your specific situation, you will not know what the restrictions are. And asking someone to come inspect is not a good idea, but neither is lying. If you lied about your situation and you did end up being inspected, or worse yet, made a claim, you would be dropped as an insured AND in the case of a claim, it would be denied. Schutzhund training is NOT personal protection training. But try telling that to any insurer. Small farm operations covered under a variety of insurers also exclude kennels. Do your homework before you have an issue. And I guarantee if you ever do have an incident, you will be cancelled, if your claim is not denied. When talking with an agent, you better ask specifically if GSDs or your breed of choice is on the list. Simply hoping they will not ask is asking for trouble.

Farmers Insurance in Texas.

Farm Bureau is not just for farms. We have a home out in the country on about 15 acres but we don't "farm" anything and the only animals we own are GSDs.

New Jersey here..land of the taxes of all kinds up your a--. I have 3 german shepherds. 2 Fema certified and therphy certified. I found First Trenton but had to send copy of certs and then argue with the agent. Company approved agent was suprised. They did send someone to the house. My agent noted 1(one) german shepherd on property. not three. She told me to keep quiet, they all are black sables and look alike. Also, for the households with a few dogs...get 1 therapy certified and ask your doctor for a note stating they are for your emotional well being. REALLY!! Has worked in some cases.

Good information on this thread. Farmer's has insured my home, plus liability required for Schutzhund training, for decades, literally. But this is the name of the game, for insurance companies now: Collecting premiums while minimizing risk. Funny because I used to know a woman who raised GSDs, now deceased. She was a frequent drunk and trained her dogs in street style bitework. Every now and then one of them would bite someone pretty good. She was very cavalier about it, really. She usually got out of it by offering the bitee a free puppy! She had insurance for her kennel, but she never had a claim, so far as I know. I just know that I'd never get away with half the crap she did. Must be karma!
