I just observed today that one of my young male has lost some pigment right from the middle of the nose. It was all right until the last week. It had snowed lately and area outside the kennels is frozen. I have seen him biting and gnawing at the snow. Could it be that he has rubbed his nose too hard with the frost and snow coz the pigment is just simply gone from the middle of the nose. Rest of the nose is as dark as it was before. Otherwise everything on the face and other parts is perfectly all right. I just have moved the dog in just order to avoid his contact with that thick frost outside. My main concern is that if this pigment will come back or not. Its slight at the moment but of course I am concerned.

Do not concern yourself over this, if the nose pigment was okay it will come back,we have had some really bad what you would call PINK colouration of the nose and they have all come back to normal, you are right about the time of the year this is when you normally see the problem.

This is what is called "winter nose" or so I have believed it to be so for many years - we had a bitch who had this every winter, most the year her nose was jet black, but every year when the frost and snow came and the temperature dropped very low she would have a pinkish coloured nose - this lasted about 3 months and then returned to normal. Maybe someone more qualified can let us know why this happens???? or is it just one of those unusual things that we will never know the reason why???? HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL.

Well, I must say that this is something which is charecterized by the subjection of the dogs to extremely low tempratures and specially when they are left out to play in snow. Kinda cautrized I think. Well, I am going to cut down on the exposure to the open snow and see how it goes. Thanks for the opinions.

It's a snow nose, Suhaif. The color will return in the spring. Some dogs are subject to snow noses while others living in the same conditions never get one. If he's eating out of a plastic bowl, switch him to stainless steel.

I have had this problem in the past during the winter. I then heard about the Sea Meal suppliment from Solid Gold and I no longer have this problem. I have been giving this to my dogs for several years now with great results. Here is the website to Solid Gold... www.solidgoldhealth.com Just look under suppliments. I hope this helps. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Just read the replies to the question about the brown spot on the nose. This is why I came here to find the answer to my problem. My 6 month old GSD developed that about two months ago, it's a stripe right down the middle. Yes, we had it real cold this year and he played in the snow and he eats out of a plastic bowl. I guess that answered my question and the plastic bowl is history. According to one reply, the nose will turn black again and I sure hope so. It used to be. I have another question that maybe someone can answer. When my puppy walks, he kind of twists his rear "shakles", no idea how to spell that. He doesn't do it all the time, just sometimes and it looks funny. He is also limping once in a while when he gets up. Any ideas what it could be? He is 6 months old and gets Solid Gold food and a walk of about 3 miles a day. Any advise?

It sounds to me like your puppy make have pano...which is basicaly growing pains. It comes and goes. When your puppy is done growing this will go away. I contacted Solid Gold about this and they told me to give my puppy Yucca Powder. I have some for sale if you are interested. It would be a GREAT help to your puppy. The yucca powder is a anti-inflamitory. You may contact me at..... Jyl dukenheim@comcast.net

yes this happens with my fella too, and I live in northern california it's not like it gets that cold...(well recently it has though!!)His nose gets lighter (faded brown not pink ) in the winter and darkens back up in the spring. I thik this happens more with snow dogs(mal and huskies)If I remember correctly someone told me(my vet) it could be a vitamin deficiency but that only if it is year round. Hope that helps...

Anyone ever used Shark Cartalige? I have heard it is supposed to do wonders for dogs with ED or HD or dogs with Arthritis, possibly even growing pains? Never needed it myself, just curious if anyone uses it or not, and the results.
