Since my suggestion that Slam and Kim really need not defend their experience in dogs to VK has 4 dislikes, I guess that some here think it's okay to challenge them. I don't.

moons posted outside the off topic forum???????

blitzen, calling troll does not make you not a troll.

on the topic of weak dogs, there is an unnamed trait, i prolly am imagining it but folks talk of versatility etc so cos of my access to certain resources i had some SAR junkies want to do some "wilderness" training that i could provide wilderness for. it did not go so well for the dogs, they fell apart early on and the leader canceled the training. maybe just lack of exposure but the dogs did not perform as expected when things started to get deep.

i am getting at concepts like a dog to thermo-regulate, pace itself and look after itself by itself  in an environment that is out of the handlers control, is it just lack of exposure or is there are real genetic component for a dog to problem solve independently, thermo-regulate and stay focused and calm in unpredictable environments.

this was the same area i took the SAR team/s, the dogs here are not going for a leisurely off leash stroll in the woods they are working;

hah that looks as nasty as where I used to have to go fetch dumb hikers and hunters! Much of mine was done in the great dismal swamp as shown here on video link that land right there once you get off the boat. Had alligators and poisonous snakes though I am sure ours are not as bad as some of yours.  http://youtu.be/VmLkInGU65k this is one of the areas in the middle of it that I used to live near by  http://youtu.be/xZWRy2P5KzY

This was never fun to slog through!

Were the sar people you took out there disaster/debris sar or wilderness/ air scent rescue? I much prefered any call out besides that freaking swamp!

to be fair they were mainly disaster/debris trained, the wilderness was to round out some training in the same way a schuts person might occasionally do suit work. interesting it is easier to find a rubble pile than a wilderness for them, they do as many outdoor searches as they can. should not matter to a stable dog imo if they find themselves in a strange enviro any more than testing a dog on slippery surfaces.

the event occurred when the wild dogs were training their pups to kill, these are native species unintentionally crossed with fighting breeds/catch dogs, they have no natural fear of humans and they were howling in the distance - i told the team they are calling their mates in and they will be checking us out, they thought i was joking until more dogs started howling closer and tracking our direction. the handlers fell apart more then the dogs at this point, that no GPS signal available or cell phone coverage proved too much lol.

I read this and just wondered at this! Does opening the pool gate to take a swim after a vigorous game of jolly ball fetch, or boomerang throwing count? I try to keep him out and he just won't have it!

no it means it has the sense not to get itself in situations it can not handle and the brains to get out of situation it did not cause all independent of a handler. it also means the dog does not burn up useless nervous energy that some would call drive and is the same dog not matter how the enviro changes no matter if they have been working for 5 minutes or 5 days straight, i guess you will never get it.
