With so many people pushing the "pit bulls aren't aggressive, humans make them that way" statement, maybe this old woman was not cautious with the animal. She may have had no idea about dog behavior or posture and did something to scare the dog and it attacked. Or the dog could just be aggressive.

I am all for rescuing, but I stopped volunteering at my rescue in Houston prior to leaving for Spain because they would absolutely lie about the dogs breeds that they were fostering. There were dogs that were at least 80% staffy or obviously pits and the rescue would say they were lab mixes and have inexperienced people foster or adopt them. We got SO many of these dogs back that it wasn't funny. If they had listed them as pits, people who already had pits and knew the breed could have found them more easily.

I believe that german shepherds/ pit types / rotties/ etc should not be adopted out to first time owners or inexperienced owners unless the dog has a solid, solid, solid temperament and less drive. This is just my personal opinion! I hate to see fearful/skittish shepherds adopted out to first time dog owners. I always give them links to online forums and info for local trainers but the dogs are usually returned. Like I said, I am just a volunteer and have no choice where the dogs go.

((Sorry, Off topic, I know! I have been needing to vent about my rescue for a while)

What's the dog not being neutered have to do with it? Well, this dog ripped a person's arm off. You want him to reproduce?? And you may be sure that white trash that can't even be bothered emptying the mailbox or keeping their property looking half-decent sure as heck are NOT going to worry about the dog roaming the neighbourhood and makin' babies. As a matter of fact, they might even encourage it!

I was a renter for a good number of years, and my house always had one of the best-kept yards in the neighbourhood, so being a renter is no excuse.

Rocky, I fully understand your rant. And the more times a dog is returned, the more chance it stands of winding up on the wrong end of a needle.  Sad Smile

SS... I think you misunderstood my comment regarding the woman renting. It just makes no sense to buy a new home and then let the value of your home plummet through neglect. That is not what a new home owner would do. Now, if it was a situation where the landlord is mailed a check on time, they might not be aware of the deteriorating condition of the home. The point is, most people in that area take pride of ownership. Something was not right. And went from bad to worse.

When I was renter, I planted giant marigolds in the crumbling cinder blocks out front. It made a glorious color "fence". Even the neighborhood gang kids walking by and swiping at them, couldn't defeat those marigolds. (My rant.)

Bee, that was EXACTLY my point! Rental homes frequently are run down, especially if owned by absentee landlords who are just waiting for the property to appreciate so they can sell it to a developer and make big bucks. However, the appearance of the place depends on the tenants. Good tenants will do the best with what they have, and make an effort to keep the place looking as nice as possible. Tenants who are into drinking and drugs and just generally living a really trashy lifestyle will be sure to make the place deteriorate even faster. Sad Smile

Older folks with failing health & no help often live in homes rife with neglect...& adult children are often in denial about their aging parents abilities to cope; after all they had been coping, why wouldn't that continue? Hence leaving a monster that was too much for her to deal with to care for. Possibly she fell, & the dog was spooked by her change of position & demeanor...who knows? The son who was at her bedside certainly sounded like someone who felt a twinge of guilt....

Well....since we are already talking about rentals....I am finishing my dual major in May and I have had to choose where I am living in Texas from Spain (Very diffficult!) Because students tear apart houses, deposits are crazy in my college city.

For a 2 bedroom 1 bath duplex, my roommate and I have to pay a 700$ deposit each, 800$ per pet deposit, as well as a non refundable 200$ move out fee for cleaning (we haven't even moved in yet). Our rent is only 300/month each, including all utilities/cable/internet/gas/trash/etc, so the deposits didn't kill me since they are refundable.

I have seen houses that were completely destroyed by college students going to school with 50,000 of loans and no money to pay the home owner even if they sued so I understand the high fees.

It is a horrendous story. Horrible for the old woman,also...
Horrible for the breeed. Sooo many people talk crap about pit bulls, this just adds to the dilema for the thousands of 'throw away dogs' already waiting rescue.
Pitbulls ARE NOT a viscious breed of dog,IF rraised properly, and bred properly.
Just another case where to many innocent victims pay the price for pure ignorance!!!

Seems the sons have been in a bit of trouble with the law in the not-so-distant past. Not directly relevant, of course, but it could help paint a picture of adults living at home with aging parents for "other than cultural" reasons.  http://wilton.patch.com/groups/police-and-fire/p/wilton-twins-arrested-one-held-on-70k-bond
