Sorry you're insulted. And the majority are lazy without AI. A few exceptions to the rule dont change that.

Not much you don't know, is there, Zdog. You never cut anyone a break, do you?

by zdog on 17 June 2014 - 02:06

wtf is that supposed to mean? I'm glad you're having fun with your dog.  I don't think you accomplished anything more than what many other breeders have done without using AI.  I'm glad you're proud of your dog.  What do you want me to say,"oh gee, you're right, AI is totally awesome"  it will save this breed to dip into genes that have already contributed over 200 breedings over and over and over and over again.  You're right, nothing could go wrong :)  if the breeding choices from this unbroken line of HOT SchIII studs was really that good, why are you going back to a dog 4 generations ago?  all those offspring and nothing current fits the bill?  and you think this is an arguement for these breeders to use AI????  it illustrates my point perfectly and you don't even realize.

saving semen from bloodlines that are dwindling could very well help to unblock and free up the genetic pool in the future.
several of the founding lines are already extinct.

VKGSDs

The reason I would freeze my male is his damline.  I would take another puppy from her or something linebred on her in a heartbeat.  Unfortunately she is deceased so I can't get any more dogs from her directly, otherwise I already would have.  Her breeder is no longer breeding (he is no longer living) and as I understand, his kennel has been dissolved.  The other dogs related to my dog that were bred by my dog's breeder are either not breeding dogs or are being bred to other lines/dogs that I don't personally like.  It's not preserving the qualities I loved in his dam and in him.  I have met some and have not been impressed (not saying they are bad dogs or the breeding wasn't good, but I know what I want).  I don't know of any other way to explain it or maintain what I want and not have to use a line I don't like or water things down because it's more convient to breed dogs that are living in the USA here now.  I'd rather pay the fees to collect and freeze my dog and take my time finding the right female, if she exists.  I'd rather not have another dog than have to settle.  JMHO

why did they go extinct?  why didn't people breed to them?  did they not produce good enough offspring to consider for furture generations?  or did they, they just weren't know enough to be marketable and profitable to those selling the dogs?  were they drowned out by more "popular" studs because they weren't marketable?  in either situation, how does AI help?  If the real deal can't compete market wise with the popular studs here a now, what will they do when you can just keep going back to the semen pond and get more popular stud semen?  think that bodes well for future generations?  and if they couldn't produce well enough to be considered for future breeding, then I can't say i'm said to see them go

They are being bred to more popular studs, possibly simply because they are more popular (VA dogs in the US and Germany), more easily available or cheaper because breeders know each other/have other agreements, or are producing a more mild GSD that is a nice, happy, pretty pet but doesn't possess the hardness and level of discernment I expect from a breeding candidate.  I look at temperament and how the dog trains and works above all else.  I like a certain "type" of dog in temperament just like some folks like a certain "type" in look. I could go into detail but it would sound like I'm slamming these dogs and that's not the point here. The value in the dam line is that the granddam was bred when she was older (I believe her dam as well) so this brought forward some of the lines from farther back that I like to see, tougher working dogs.  Even though my dog is only 5, he has dogs/lines in his pedigree that others would have 2-3 generations farther back, more diluted (or lost, if the breedings are not preserving them).  Of the females we have looked at for breeding so far, most of them don't interest me and would not be preserving the traits I'm looking for (maybe if we're lucky, or maybe more indirectly).  One female we bred did not take (I am convinced and my vet is convinced she was bred too early and that was the reaction I got from my dog, but the owner insisted on a certain timeline for breeding whereas I think progesterone is great to a point but the dogs will know) so we are planning to try agin and I am weighing getting a puppy.  Another female we planned had her first litter with a different dog and is not being bred again for reasons irrelevant here.

I have no intention of my dog "competing" with studs.  I do not stud him out to anyone who will write a check and show me a female with papers. My dog has more titles and health certificates than any VA dog in this country that I'm aware of right now.  His quality and success speaks for itself and if other people are more interested in a certain look, that's no sweat off my back.  I am not a breeder and I do not make money off my dogs.

In the US it's a personal choice; use frozen semen or don't. Geez.....

GSD Lineage

by GSD Lineage on 17 June 2014 - 22:06

A long time ago a certain trainer/breeder had a spectacularDutch Shepherd
female who finished her working titles (Ring Sport) at maybe age 5? ( it takes longer to title in the US as things are more spread out) This was back in the days that sellers would send VHS tapes in the mail (Post Office) of their dogs working out.

Well, she had trouble getting her bred, ( female rejected all available males) and they waited so long, (older female) but, eventually they used AI (Not sure if chilled/frozen), The pups looked great. That breed was also rare in the US then, so, you needed to really search to find adequate dogs/bloodlines to use. It is still like that in many areas even for GSD.

I think AI/frozen is way too much trouble for anyone trying to make a quick buck.

@Susie

That is the reason.

you think the sv cares about flavor of the month. remember before Henkel, the sv prasident was all time a show judge and was allways the Judge for the gh rueden on the bszs and the bundeszuchtwart was the judge for the females. every prasident have put his favor (line) in the top ten , generation of dogs have get breed over the same line, no one have care about that.than the next prasident have put his favor in front and people start to use these dogs. not true?

The Sv is like a big company, some people make big money, some people do the job good and some people must to the sh.. work and get kicked.
