Have had the identical issue with my male... also from high drive lines (Ufo/Xito, Tinkerhof) The 4' fence went the way of the dodo bird a year ago, so we got him a 6' 10x20 kennel... welded wire.  Took him about a week til he tore the tarp off the top and cleared that as well.  We're getting another pannel or two to put over the top, and prayin' that will stop him.  When he gets out he trots over to the neighbors to say hello, help them stack firewood, and  chase ball for the kids... Think that blessing your lucky stars to find  him, and trying to figure some way to outthink him are in the cards for both of us.  A hot wire inside the 6' kennel on the inside might also be a help.  You gotta love these drivey dogs!  LOL  Ikon is now 5 years old and smarter than most people I know.

All of mine are glued to the back door or porch gate trying to find me, or they do run front fence along road if a motorcycle but they look at front door every 3  mins to see if I appear or my son now that he is in charge of the 4 left back home..

When let out you would assume they would go run the acreage..no they are running from front to back door trying to listen for me and guess which door I am about to open...funny lovely kids..

Glued to my back side if I am out side..unless a prey predator comes in eye site..THEY hear everything that moves night or day and then they go into action but one call and I put them in kennel..I have never left any one of them outside when gone..ONE inside guards my home and one in kennel wire crate on front porch and one on back patio in crate ..NO  one knows who can get out or how they will get hit and from which end of property..MY son rigged some traps to open kennels if need be with an electrical device..HE Is an electrician and has worked in radio /tv communications so he has tricks he has developed to keep our property well in view of dogs and him on videos..

GOOD luck and I think the board fence is best with neighbors..had those back in the Galveston area in neighborhoods where you have to have dogs .

I am glad I asked the forum. Good ideas and similar experiences are giving me ideas to solve the problrm.  He has an annual vet check coming up. The trainer may have some ideas. He knows this dog very well.

YR, "electrocute the genes we want our dogs to have." ??

Hot livestock wire does NOT electrocute. Your Idea of " come to Jesus meeting" will need to be pretty brutal to "retrain the genes you want your dogs to have". The electricity from an intermittent fence charger is just that.....it ZAPS, it doesn't electrocuted.  For you to imply that is absurd and gives false information to people who are looking to prevent their beloved dogs from getting over their fence and ending up road kill.......

You know what else? That hot wire WILL RETRAIN the dog. Once the dog hits it and gets ZAPPED one time , it will not do it again in all likelihood. Lesson learned and no beatings from "come to Jesus meeting," which punishment after the fact is worthless and wrong.

That's all I have to say about this...yellow rose, you are being over dramatic saying the dog's going to have the desired genes elctrocuted out of him, when in reality it is a very safe and sure way to stop the dog from going over the fence and meeting a demise much worse than being ZAPPED once or twice, and much more humane and effective than your "come to Jesus meeting".

Btw, yr, to answer your question, " what happens if a child or an old lady touches the fence?"

They will learn not to touch the fence!  Simple.

Do you think that of all the horse pastures using hot wire to keep the livestock inside the fence all over the country have never been touched by a child or old lady? Even young grown ups get ZAPPED every once in a while. Last week I rewired a mile of fence for my horses and BAM! I touched when I should not have.....I'm still here and no electrocution occured plus my horses are enjoying belly deep grass and are not traumatized by having a mile of hot wire surrounding them. ;-) But they know they will get ZAPPED if they challenge the wire. In the mean time, my horses are not in the road while the solar powered fence charger just keeps on clicking.

If you don't want to use an electrified fence, you'll have to build a higher fence and top it off with a barrier that is designed to lean into your side of the yard topped off with some sort of wire barrier. Does that make sense? In my experience once a dog goes over a fence, it will try it again. The topper will keep it from suceeding. I have owned a few big dogs that would sit back, look at the top edge of a 6 foot fence and in one effort jump straight up and over it like a deer. When I put the barrier on the top, they only tried it one more time.

I used to breed and board dogs next to a dairy farm that was surrounded of course by a electrified fence. That fence provided one side of my contained ex area. A dog might get all excited looking at the heifers next to him and he might touch the wire with his nose, but only one time. After that they'd only sit back and watch them as if they were taking in a movie. My kids only touched it one time and so did I. The correction wasn't continuous, it was pulsing; even the most dense dog like my bassett, not one of the shapest knives in the drawer,  got the picture pretty fast.

My .02 here...  Presuming the dog is grabbing the top of the fence and pulling himself over rather than just sailing over.  I have seen where cable has been strung at the top of the fence with PVC pipe strung on it.  The PVC pipe will roll so the dog can't get a grip.

Since I was a farm girl for many years, I did a lot of fencing and  one hot wire held in all our cows and horses and they do work. However, considering how litigious people are nowadays;  I probably wouldn't do a hot wire especially in town.

If insulators are on the inside of the fence and not on top, it would not be available for anyone to  touch unless they trespass....then they deserve a ZAP.

FYI  I have never beat , whipped or hit , picked up by collar , chocked , or strangled or used force on any dog of mine or anyone elses.. That can be proven. Too many people know me..Come to Jesus Meeting means you use proper training methods with the  Command, correction and praise...THE correction methods comes in many forms to hard headed dogs who know the commands and the rules to not jump a fence or dig a hole..there are many ways to retrain a dog . A forceful Alpha voice and action can tell the dog you mean BUSINESS.

You assumed too much.. I detest people who hit, use cattle prods, electric collars on young green dogs, yank a dog out of his skin, and hang a dog till they pass out.... and I have been in two schutzhund clubs and watched dogs tied to trees and shocked so do not tell me my" Come to Jesus meeting"is cruel... It means get serious about your immediate reaction and the dog knows  you are ALPHA AT  that immediate time and he will then respect that Correction and may not do it again. But do not count on it with the high prey dogs we raise.. NEVER leave outside unattended if not in a secured place.

That is a literal meaning of :  Find a method of stopping your 4 or 5 year old dog who has high drive , and knows he is not to do the thing or activity he just engaged in...I am not a novice for handling hard dogs for sure.. A young dog is not to be corrected the same way an adult dog , which the dog in this thread is an adult not a pup.

THE only top that won't come off a kennel is a welded 4" panel from Tractor supply or other supply fence companies, cut to fit as the panels are 11 foot long,,,cut and tack them on all sides in three or 4 places..

USING shock treatment on a  young dog can and may restrict his God given gene to approach with boldness his prey or the next time he need to react to something important with a bite or an immediate reaction in timely manner, he will hesitate or not react at all if he has been shocked or Zapped as you call it. Many corrections on a young pup , can keep that pup from approaching when the time is right in bite work , the stick or the sleeve if he has been told NO and corrected for everything he does, unknowingly suppressing the natural bite he thinks he may get screamed NO at...Seen it many times..in dogs hit with newpapers also, suppressing the desire to dive into the bite or catch the prey.

.I have touched electric fences in many cattle fields and I would not want it done to me.

There are many ways to keep dogs in your place of home or kennel.
