I believe it's a matter of following the breed standards. It's a matter of continuing the integrity of the breed through schutzhund titling which tests the dogs temperament and working ability.

The dogs are kinda in the toilet now. But how does schutzhund test the viability of a show line, a man killer, scent detection dog, a strong civil protection dog, a guide dog, a ptsd dog, an epileptic service dog, a bomb dog, diabetic, farm dog herding.. and so on and so on.

Do those of you who determine breed worthiness based on your own defintion of performance, not titles, find that you are able to reproduce breed worthy dogs consistently? Same question for those who title.

I have a WGSL that has been used for stud a few times. He is Schutzhund titled, KKL1, V rated, also UKC Champion.  Hips OFA good, elbows OFA normal, also has DM n/n, OFA eyes, and thyroid panel normal. He also has over 25 other titles in addition to the Schutzhund title, BH, and AD (including agility, flyball, dock diving, lure coursing, and other venue of tracking, obedience, and protection). I do not know any working lines that have comparable titles.  He will be 6 years old soon which to a lot of show people means a "veteran" but I see him in his prime.  We still train and compete every month, not just slap a few titles on a dog and call it "breedworthy".  This holiday weekend was the first weekend in the past 6 weekends that I have not been traveling to compete with my dog or doing exibitions for parades, 4H, etc.  I also own one of his sons, now 8 months old.  What is breedworthy to me always depends on the actual pair/pedigree and the goals for the breeding.  I don't have arbitrary title or pedigree requirements, as long as there is a clear goal and the pedigree will support that goal. This is how I feel in general, not limited to a show line dog (the dog I mentioned earlier is my only WGSL dog, my others have been working lines).

Gigante, how do you test your breeding dogs? Do you base their breed worthiness on titles or on your own evaluations?

Blitzen,

Its a crap shoot you can stack the deck and still never come out with royal flush or even a pair sometimes.  No title guarantees a good sport dog breeding. No working dog guarantees he/she will ever produce good working dogs. (edit) No showline champion guarantees the same. :)~ (end)  If this was the case breeding would be easy. So really at the end of the day its a lot of guesses and spectacular luck to strike something exceptional in an entire litter which is unlikely even in a life of breeding, from what I see. If I get 1-2 super solid dogs with the desired results, each litter Im pretty happy 3-5 ecstatic!!!.  I then choose the best from each of those for specific traits that I wish to excel in, and traits that are not there that I wish to remove. Even before that the lines behind them, to make sure it was not a one out or in. I like to see it piled up deep or non existent in the pedigree. Then trial and error precisely like everyone else does. So the short of it, is, each line and each individual determine the best guess for breedworthyness for my desired outcome.

Anyone else? Anyone just breed litters because they like their dogs and what they produce?

Blitzen, why dont you tell us why do/did you breed. What criteria or reasons did you use?

by Blitzen on 07 July 2014 - 15:07

I don't breed GSD's, never have never will. Look, if you don't want to respond to my questions, don't. I really only wanted to hear from showlines breeders anyway.  I said that from the start.  Trying to get some real information from those who actually breed and show showlines.
