Sunsilver,

Think about what we were talking about in the other thread, then see if you can see why the dog jumps up on me.

Also,

What is the purpose of the little boy in the video with the leash?

I have to echo Denwolf's question, and think too that the dog lives with you and those kids are your kids.  I think the dog looks like he wants to play, but he might be a little confused about the rules of the game.  His intensity is not as high as it would be if the children were not on the field with him (they are not his handlers but he is clear headed about their presence).  And he cannot go into defense drive because you're his handler.  I will keep watching the videos and seeing others responses.  I like these kinds of threads!  Makes me think about what I see in my own dog.  And when my children are around, my dog always takes his intensity level way down when playing.  Although if my children were holding that leash and the "helper" was approaching in any kind of intimidating way, my dog would have gone into defense and "protected" my child.  That's why I think Paco knows you (this helper) very well!

Zenit2010 and Denwolf,

You are correct, he is my dog and those are my kids.

That does make his defense a little conflicted.  However, the litttle boy is holding a leash hooked to a pinch collar because Paco will punch or bite me in the head as one of his counters.  You can see him punch to the head once, and the feet on me are a counter to push me back when I push him while barking.  Not a perfect counter, but acceptable under the circumstances.  You will also notice that he will channel into gripping what ever hand is threatening him.  With or without a stick in it, and he does hand to hand transfers smoothly.  He has in the past bitten me in the arm when I am too slow.

What else?

What is his response with the same older child handler when you do a prey approach?    My guess is that the barking is more consistent and less conflicted , and the dog will hit the sleeve harder than when you are doing a frontal, defensive approach.    The dog seems mindful of his young handler and seems to be capping as to not overwhelm the young person.    Interesting example of the "counter", is this something that you taught the dog or is that his natural reaction that you have encouraged?

Where's the video of the "lift-off"?   Wink Smile  j/k

First, I would NEVER post pics or videos of my kids anywhere on line, second, you are left handed, third, why are you working your own dog that lives with you in defense, how is the rest of your relationship with him?

Fourth, how old is that dog? He is not a "little" conflicted, he is A LOT conflicted and his body language shows it...tail, his way of barking at you...In my mind BZ and for my money, I will only own and train a dog, for whatever discipline, that brings what I want to the table genetically, I dont see that in Paco, maybe its you doing the defense work, maybe he will look better with someone else doing it, but, before any more is said, I want to see YOU holding the leash, you being behind the dog, then we can talk more.

For the record, I would place an odor in a car and have my detection dog on a 15 foot line with my then 3 year old holding it while the dog actively searched the car...that means that I could put your kid there, your wife, my girlfriend, it makes very little difference who because the dog is working to satisfy its own hunt drive.

DenWolf

I thought he might be, but did not want to presume.

He's a nice dog.. happy worker, clear headed..
You would be surprised how well you can place at a regionals with good tracking and obedience.

I would guess he brings more power on the field with a helper other than you..  and he IS still a young dog, as you mention.

Wish we were closer.. I could make some excellent quality videos with you..  but I doubt you are anywhere near Colorado.

I did find some videos of dogs being lifted off a suit.. but I cannot remember what the goal of the training session was.. (it certainly was NOT teaching an out.)

My editing computer hard drive crashed, and its in the shop for at least another week or two..  I'd have to improvise to get it posted.. if any wanted to see it.

Hired Dog,

I am not left handed. My relationship with Paco is fine.  His obedience and tracking are fine.

There are no helpers in my area who are skilled enough to bring fight and drive.  He worked on another helper about a month ago and Barking was slightly better.  Remember, he is a regional level dog.  He has never been and never will be a national power house dog. My son behind him makes him more conflicted because of the inadvertant signaling on the pinch line.

I have never taught any dog "how" to counter, I work with what they offer.  No comment from Hired dog about Paco not being equipment oriented? He will work like that with no equipment anywhere and he transfers that behavior to any helper I have worked him on.

Perfect world, I would like a better nerve out of him, with more aggression, but that's not whose on the end of the leash.

I agree with you Hired Dog, that having different handlers on the end of the leash strips away any kind of umbilical cord effect and exposes the dogs drive more readily.

And the video of the lift off is coming.  Different Dog (we took videos on four dogs that day!) and it's very interesting what happened during and after the lift off.
