GSD Lineage

Clever Here a collection of tidbits written in the late 1940s in the USA about GSD colors.

Piebald shepherds are seldom seen and when found suspected of being un-pure. Ugly shades of brindle are not popular, but they are not wrong. Some judges preffer blacks, black/tans or greys, but this is not justified.

The standard says albinos (white dogs with pink eyes and noses) are to be discarded (disqualified). This has nothing to do with normal white dogs with dark eyes black noses. White is not even a faded color as the term is employed in the standard.

However, white dogs are seldom found with the requisite angulation, length and stuctural excellence that defines a first rate specimen. It is difficult to get a white by to a championship.

"Fading Color" is a term cooked up by the Germans to designate dogs of lighter colors with the allegation they are a sign of degeneracy.

Either way they look ok, (Nice) but certainly the two have split into similar but different looking dogs, still they came from each other and seems like it is no problem taking from the others gene pool when it is needed. I love finding old information on all the dogs.

Lineage, that's great to read about the piebald shepherds! Looks like nothing has changed in THAT department!  Teeth Smile  (People stil think they're not pure shepherd...)

I well remember one of the first threads on the database about them, and several people were absloutely totally convinced they were mixed breeds. I think those who thought they could be pure were even ridiculed by at least one poster!

I believe that most all breeds that produce the variety of colors found in the GSD can also produce piebalds, pandas, and/or dogs with the Irish spotting gene.

White is not a faded color; it is the absence of color.

The gene for white in the GSD is a masking gene...a white sheet thrown over the dog that hides its true color. White GSD's are black, sable, black and tan etc., you just can't see it. ;)

That is right, Blitzen & Whiteshepherds
Solid black/sable and saddle patterns are on Agouti (Lokus A)

The gene that causes the white is called Extension (Lokus E)
Below the better known loci influencing final coat color in dogs.

  • Lokus E (White/Cream e/e or Agouti / K Expressed black if E/e or E/E)
  • Lokus K (Brindle & Dominant Black)
  • Lokus A (Sable / Saddle / bi-color and Solid)
  • Lokus D (Blue or non Blue)
  • Lokus B (Liver or non Liver)
  • Lokus EM (melanistic mask)
  • Merle (Merle or non Merle)

If I could get materials from the 1920/1930s I bet I'd find more on the sources of the White. There was an American GV in the 1950s that produced white, and also solid black progeny.

Blitzen: Yes it is very confusing..THAT is why I want the discussion..  WE have posters in Europe and here that know the history of the White and I think it needs an open discussion to show all the facts and not anything but discussion and compliments where disserved/

I would hope we attract some of these breeders to our forum because as we see , thru these two ads, and others in DOG WORLD, there are kennels producing healthy , working white shepherds right along side the same kind of work and show we do.but as we see in other countries it seems to be a much greater venue. We are encouraging more and more of the working lines to enter the shows and keep the structure correct and well balanced. IT cannot hurt any of us to see these beauties even if we do not intend to breed or raise one.  I admire the ones we see in these ads and I would like to learn more.
