X-rays were taken today as my 7-month old GSD female Olla Stastena /call name Lola/ keeps limping. I suspected it was pano and I was right. So here are some pictures for those who like reading x-rays. You ca see inflamation in the humerus.

And finally hips x-rays

by Nans gsd on 04 December 2014 - 17:12

AWH;  thank you for sharing these, I have  been looking for pano explanations on xrays for a while;  I posted a while back to see if I could get an example of a dog with pano and how it shows up on an x-ray;  no response.  Anyway Lola's hips look good, but I really don't know what I am looking for as far as pano goes,  you mentioned inflammation, and what and where do you see that??  Thx in advance,  Nan

PS:  Just so you know, my favorite vet of all times did tell me when your dog has pano to rest it;  which is as you probably know VERY hard to do with a puppy but more brain work, less running, jumping, cavorting.  Leash walks on soft surfaces as they do not know any better when they feel better not to abuse their bodies.  good luck.  Nan

She has inflamation in both front legs, if you look at the humerus that part of the bone which is grey in the x-ray is o.k., the white shadowing is the inflamation. Here is a good link to some pictures of pano - http://www.tierklinik.net/panostitis.htm

Yes, as you say she should rest a lot and has been given Carprodyl for 10 days. Well, she has lots of drive and she doesn´t want to listen to my advice Teeth Smile. So we stopped all the protection and obedience training and we will take just short walks but she needs to carry her Gappay ball in mouth at least, lol. We can also do some tracking, 60 feet long tracks are o.k./good brainwork for her/

Vet said both hips and elbows are very nice /he is a specialist and is certified to give official FCI stamps/.

Yep, that's pano all right! Whew.

Rest is good, but you must not let muscle atrophy develop or you can affect joints that were previously good.

How many distemper shots has your dog had?

by Nans gsd on 04 December 2014 - 21:12

So am I correct in seeing that she has it pretty bad both hips/elbows;  poor girl.  My (18 months old today) boy has had two bouts of it, each lasting 3 weeks, made him rest which was very hard but with the first bout he slept a lot, thought  of jeez he is going to grow again and I am hoping NOT on that;  but  lasted 3  weeks in the rear and is now just getting over about a 3 week bout in the front, same side.  Sooooooooo, have not x-rayed him as of yet and unless a wreck happens don't plan on it at this late date until 2 years old for OFA, no one around here does x-rays without anestitic (sp)Tongue Smile and I don't plan on putting him under unless mandatory.  Hate the stuff.  Has been raised on raw from 13 weeks on and now have him on Orijen 6 fish and raw.

What did you feed your girl.  Just curious as my first GSD WGSL boy was fed raw/kibble and started pano at 12-14 weeks, really really bad, x-rayed his hips at 4 months and was sure he was dysplastic (NOT) as he was so lame.  So my favorite vet told me to feed a crappy low protein diet, breeder had a fit and crate rest.  So that is what I did for a while, can't really remember how long, am thinking about l-2 months off and on.  Not the crappy diet but did feed grandads raw ground premixed formula which is pretty low protein and some type kibble; probably Euk.  This goes back to 2002 so Eukanuba was probably as crappy as I could get at that time.  Not really sure if the lower protein helped or not but he was one of those boy puppies with really really down pasterns also, absolutely hugh puppy which I do not think is good or is any help to a growing pup at all.

Great days,  Nan

Nans, this dog's hips are fine, as are her elbows. We should all be so lucky as to get hips like these when we buy an immature dog.  Panosteitis is an inflammation of the long bones of the legs, and has nothing to do with the construction of the joints.

Guess I had better go back and re read my post,  I realize that Pano has nothing to do with joint conformation;  was just curious as to what I was looking for and I agree this bitch's hips and elbows look good.  Was inquiring as to what the pano looked like on an x-ray.  Think I get it now but don't speak German so op's article was a little hard to follow although I think I got it.

Was hoping someone else might post other x-rays of pano but to no avail.  That's oK,  I'll keep looking...  Thx a lot for sharing this info  Nan
