What was "the deal"? The "deal" is that without additional riders, colic coverage is $3k, period, and with caveats. I had no reason to add additional riders, nor could I afford them on this horse. I also would not be willing to let him die just so I could use his mortality coverage rather than just pay the bill.

My insurance also only covers $3000 for colic.

I would suggest looking into Smart Pak's Colic Care, for those who have horses. My gelding will be enrolled when his 1 year colic anniversary passes. I know of a couple people who have had to use it, Smart Pak was really good about paying out.

Do you think the circumstances would prevent him being eligible? I'm also worried about renewing his insurance; I don't consider him a "regular" colic risk, still. This was, according to the vet, a very straightforward, mechanical reason for blockage, nothing to suggest he is "colic prone." When he's out of the woods I'll worry about insurance, I guess.

Thanks for the link; I remember looking at it once before.

Jenni, I'd also suggest you consider hitting up the manufacturer of the wormer that was used. One shouldn't have to put an animal's life at risk by merely treating for internal parasites, especially when it appears that this is becoming a more common adverse effect of the treatment. Also suggest reporting this to the FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine.

I am relieved to hear Chief has made through the surgery and is back on his feet post-op, and hope he makes a quick recovery. When it comes to horses, I learned a long time ago that when things go wrong with them, it usually tends to happen spectacularly wrong, and the costs associated with the wrong thing are always astronomical. It's one of the few reasons I've yet to acquire my own horse, despite having wanted one since I was a kid scrounging around the boarding stables for 'project ponies' whose riders had gotten bored with them and the parents of those riders needed someone to clean the animal up, work with it to deal with the barn-sourness that had set in [or the fear behaviors that had developed, but that's another story for another day] so said parents could try and recoup some of their losses by being able to sell the animal for something close to what they'd paid for him or her to begin with.  Suffice it to say I'm happy living vicariously through the various things that go wrong with horses owned by friends, at least until I retire and will have enough time to ride to justify the risks of things going wrong with horses.

Jenni-

I don't think he will have any problems, they have to have been colic free for one year. Just something for you to keep in mind for extra resources when he is eligible in a year! :) Plus, I really like Smart Pak's supplements(he has to be using one of several Colic Care ones to be eligible)

Glad he made it through surgery and hope his recovery is uneventful.

I use this place  http://www.horsemenslab.com/ for doing fecal egg counts.  Very convenient and you are not overworming.

Was just on a tour of an equine surgical hospital last weekend and one of the things that the vet stated was that horses have a digestive system that is easily prone to problems with all the turns and such.  If he did have a heavy worm load the act of all those worms dying can cause major problems.

Fecal egg counts are not reliable for tapes, which is what he had.
