Good points Susie and a better explanation than Cut's simplicity. The dogs of your first category are more likely to be an old school a $$ hole.

Good explanation, Susie. I have worked with the first type many times over the years. That's why though the second type you described is seen more often, when I hear that aggression is only fear based I know I am dealing with someone with limited exposure to first type and limited understanding of how good a working dog they can be.

So Cutaway
When a dominant dog becomes aggressive upon being challenged does it mean he is fearful?..."

To me "Dominance" and "aggression" are not the same mindset in a dog... Maybe it is my lack of experience that i see these as two distinct separate behaviors. But as long as i am breathing i will continue to learn Wink Smile

I read the behaviors as Dominance is where the dog has "taken a stand", very clear headed about they are looking to achieve (turning off pressure) where the "aggressive" behavior is more of a chaotic fear mindset. Again this my current take on a very limited time with and experience with reading dogs.

One of the things i really enjoy about this board is that i may get flamed for my comments and thoughts, but i can sift through that and gain some different points of view and ponder what was said and try to learn from the feedback!!!

Cut, I feel sorry now, I didn´t want to blame you, just tried to explain "my" personal interpretation of aggression.

We are not that far apart, that´s why I said "Some dogs seem to be aggressive, but in reality they are just dominant dogs,..." ( aggression out of self-confidence )

Dont feel sorry!! I didnt take what you or other said as negative or "against me" Teeth Smile I was serious when i stated that i like the back and forth that this board offers. Experience is something that takes time, it cant be taught only learned. And you as well as others come on here and offer that experience which then i use to better understand what i see.

Besides, I think its the responsibility of the contributors of PDB to call me on my crap when its wrong, plus your better explication is just good for the whole of PDB Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up
