Preston, that would be a good reputation to have I think. If I were a breeder it would make me feel pretty good if someone said that about me and my breeding program. When I was speaking about big heads leading eventually leading to breathing problems, bad bite, missing teeth, etc, I was referring to the possiblity of heads becoming so over done that the muzzles become too short and stubby. It can happen. No one wants to see a male GSD with a long narrow head, but I doubt many will want to see a GSD with a muzzle so short that he can't close his mouth without the tip of his tongue protruding from between his incisiors or a dog that doesn't have an patent airway. It's about extremes.

"V-Petra v. Kirchenwald, SchH 2 also have strong heads, excellent working ability and correct anatomy" Petra was retired from SchH after her 2 because of bad hips. Is dysplasia categorized as "correct anatomy"?

I guess most of us have suffered big disappointments due to HD in our dogs.

is out of VA-1 Rapi Supra and do you know how that Rapi looked like ?and his mother ?.did you ever see them and their toplines???

by marci on 18 April 2007 - 17:04

Va Rapi has a good topline compared to Pitt and sister Pitta (very prominent topline sloping I say..) I should be gradually sloping. I was wrong clearwater about LONG KRUPPE lowering down the working ability... I was only referencing it through Shawleins notes on dominant temperament drives showing on short croup high tail set GSDs...Quanto W. had a shorter and limited croup thats why went only upto vice-sieger... but I consider him UNIVERSAL GOLDEN middle. Pitt probably got a good dose of DRIVE from Tony W. I had read an interview article of Walter Martin when Zamb and Vanta was being campaigned for the top notch. Walter M. mentioned "you have to infuse a loco to your bloodline that sometimes improves the temperament.." He was narrating how he personally trained Tony and said Tony W. was something that improved that SOMETHING in his bloodlines... Not so sure but thats how I understand it.

I think it was an interview made by CARBAJAL... And guys, do you think long kruppe produces more HDs as compared to regular-sized croups seen in working lines??? They're a bit wider also... A sleeker croup and tailset when viewed on the ***topview*** looks like a TORPEDO compared to bulkier rears that COMPLEMENT the BULKY HEADS...

by clearwater2 on 18 April 2007 - 19:04

what do you think a long kruppe who has more place to settle muscles, and so a tighter backhand, with wide tighs, will that be a pro for HD or not?

by marci on 18 April 2007 - 20:04

Definitely YES // more miscles ... more support and more ligaments ... but longer pelvice bone and less Ca and PO4 plus genetic anomally will bring much HD to long kruppe... its AESTHETICALLY beautifull only...

marci from what country are you?

by marci on 18 April 2007 - 22:04

Does it matter in what country i am??? The GSD is a universal shepherd bypassing nations and continents... the helper of mankind... I'm neither for show nor for working... "the Golden Middle" I'm just looking for arguments on standard and trying to go in between... What I see as a major distinction in the two ends of the GSD spectrum is the Kruppe and not the topline. I dont argue about the ROACH... I understand its firmer and a loin that is muscular will make it thick and supportive of the back... The SWAY back on the other hand with heavy muscles will lower the middle part of the back... The Kruppe I understand was set to a certain angle to maintain the forward suspension... But we are breeding for recessives... The short croup is more natural as in other Shepherd breeds(Mallinois, Tervurens, even Border Collies) I think to lenghten the Croup is only for Aesthetic reasons... making it longer is not natural and altering genetic bone make-up aside from it being hereditary contributes to HDs,.
