if more breeders did this, it would definately help to diversify the lines. But, when you have the show fanciers thinking they will lose the look, and the working line people feeling the showline is inferior as far as work-ability of the showline dogs, they don't want to step-out and take the chance.
The fact that sables are becoming more popular and recognized to the General Public as German Shepherds, can only help the breed. .

Dark spot on the tongue is a sign of deep pigmentation. If you start loosing pigmentation then it shows often first on tongue and gums. (Gums must be black or do not breed the dog!) As I said before genes do not control only one thing. Thus it is empirically recognized that loss of pigmentation is a first sign of degeneration of the line. Thus the old truth from Czech is that if all is the same than you should always breed the dog with the spot on the tongue. I remember some purists which would not breed a dog without a black spot on a tongue.

On the other side black color-> aggression connection is probably just a myth or superstition. White dogs, horses, chicken who are heading for albinism are usually more nasty and aggressive. There is an example of a gene for albinism being connected with weak nerves with propensity to aggression. That is also going with my statement above where I have said that if we breed against nature then unintended consequences will accrue. There are almost no white animals (Polar bear) and if they are white they are not albinos. Albinos have white skin ( no melanin) white wild animals have white hair or feathers but the skin is not white.

Hans, I am sure I am not the only one who also has dogs (our sables and the blacks mostly) with big dark spots inside the ear. Sometimes, it makes the tattoo No.s hard to read.

Is this a test?
Should we have prospective owners calling up looking for uncertified hips, weak pigment, and pinched skulls?
If it is a fad, I would dare say it is a bloody good one and long time coming!
