My kennels are pea gravel,and since they have been covered for winter, they do not have the rainwater to wash them. They are starting to get stinky, what can I use to clean them. These are kennels that dogs are not in full time, only 6-8 hours a day. I have heard lime? Will that hurt the dog? Also heard spray bleach-water? Any thoughts?

Lime can burn them. Try flushing the stone with bleach and water. It should rid bacteria and kill the odor.

A good layer of salt crystals(available at Home Depot)under the gravel will neutralize the PH and eliminate the odor.

I use a product called Roccal-D-it disenfects and smells very good.You can order it from most catalogs.It can be sprayed over the gravel, but it is most important to constantly pick up the waste first- no matter what you use.Many boarding kennels use it to keep down the disease and smells.Lime as well a bleach can be rough on pads and burn them easily-even diluted.

We use Clorox and water mixture and put it in a back pack sprayer and spray all the kennels once a week to keep down on bacteria, parasites and odor. Usually ends up smelling like a swimming pool when your done :)

I would avoid using lime and strong bleach. You could use any diluted disinfectant solution (check on the Zep products at Home Depot) and a sprayer to wet down the gravel and then rake and flush with plenty of water. Chlorine can react with stone and masonry and give a very strong/lasting odor. I spend a lot of time working on tracking with my dogs so I try to be careful with things like bleach and fertilizer, etc
