Our 14th Annual HGH Herding Competition took place on October 2, 2010. The First HGH Herding Club hosted this trial at White Clover Sheep Farm in Rushville, NY. SV Herding Judge, Herr Hans Chifflard, evaluated this event according to the SV herding regulations.

Six dogs were shown, all of them were GSDs. They all qualified and achieved their HGH title.

After the remains of hurricane Nicole had dumped many inches of rain in our area the Thursday before we were blessed with sunny and somewhat cool fall weather on Saturday. The owner of the flock of exactly 260 sheep, Ulf Kintzel, ran first. This run is considered to be the more difficult one since the sheep aren’t used to the course yet. It is common courtesy that the flock owner offers to run first since it is also an advantage to compete with one’s own flock. The first run was done for title only and not as a part of the ranking of the competition. Ulf showed 3 year old Fizz vom Norsstar, aka Karla, bred and owned by Krista Taylor, Ohio and finished with 88 points and an SG (Very Good) rating.

The second competitor of the day was Ian Guest with Celeste vom Guesthaus. Celeste was last year's winner. Ian had very little time to prepare his bitch since he had moved to Tennessee earlier this year. Yet, he finished with a score of 77 points and a G rating and won third place.
The third competitor of the day was a newcomer, Stacy Smith with Fiesta vom Andi. Stacy had never competed and Fiesta was previously untitled. Just like that isn't nerve wracking enough, she discovered at the beginning of her run that a sheep had lambed in the pen. Ewe and lambs were moved into an adjacent pasture, they became the highlight for some of the many local spectators who came to watch the trial. Stacy and Fiesta received 71 points, a G rating and 4th place. They also received our newly established trophy for "Best Newcomer" sponsored by Kim Gash.
The last run before the lunch break was conducted by Kathy DiStaso with Elexa vom Quasliner Moor. She was able to improve last year's score by 8 points and received a Very Good and 81 points. She won second place and the Beth Johnson Memorial Medal for "Best Handler".
After lunch ran Kristin Siarkowicz with Lara vom Dolderbrunnen, who ran last year for the first time. Lara showed again a remarkable performance for her young age. The total score was 90 points and a V rating. That was first place. Kristin won the challenge trophy sponsored by Charlie and Roberta Kaman (Fidelco, Guide Dogs for the Blind). Unfortunately, Robbie had passed away earlier this year. May she rest in peace.

The sixth competitor of the day was again Ulf Kintzel with Lenz vom Dolderbrunnen. This run was for title only as well and was not included in the ranking of the competition. Lenz showed what kind of dog he is and received 95 points and a V rating.
Congratulations to everyone. This coming Saturday will be another HGH herding trial in NJ. This club will be hosting it for the first time. Good luck to everyone.
Our next trial will be held on Saturday, October 1, 2011 at White Clover Sheep Farm in Rushville, NY. It will be evaluated by SV Herding Judge Wilfried Scheld. We will also host a show and breed survey the Sunday after the trial, October 2.
