On  the front of todays "Dog World" my Hi-Light

Champions and BOB winners in 15 breeds to be health checked
06 Jan 2011 08:03

This article has 25 Comment(s)
THE KENNEL Club has announced that dogs of 15 ‘high-profile breeds’ who win best of breed at Crufts 2012 and at general and group championship shows after that will need to be given a clean bill of health by the show vet before their awards are confirmed and they are allowed to continue to compete at the show.
In addition, before the champion title of any dog or bitch within these breeds can be confirmed the dog will have to undergo the same procedure at a group or general championship show.
The move, which will become effective in March 2012, is to ensure that the breeds, ‘some of which suffer from health issues and which attract the greatest criticism, do not bring the whole hobby of dog showing into disrepute’, the KC said on Tuesday, adding: “This requirement is designed to improve canine health and protect the sport of dog showing.”
The breeds are the Basset Hound, Bloodhound, Bulldog, Chinese Crested, Chow Chow, Clumber Spaniel, Dogue de Bordeaux, French Bulldog, German Shepherd Dog, Mastiff, Neapolitan Mastiff, Pekingese, Pug, Shar-Pei and the St Bernard.

‘Chemical insults’

Vets will be looking for signs of ectropion, entropion, corneal damage, dermatitis, breathing difficulty on moderate exercise, lameness and skin disorders. With regard to the Crested, the principal issue will be the presence of skin damage arising from hair removal, and signs of clipper rash or ‘chemical insults’ to the skin. Show vets will be given clear guidelines on the issues which need to be considered before deciding whether to allow a dog to proceed in the group competition.
“The vets will be directed only to prevent dogs from going forward if they are suffering from some clinical problem which obviously adversely affects the dog’s wellbeing,” the KC said. “They will not be permitted to exclude dogs merely for aesthetic reasons or because of exaggerations alone unless these are causing the dog some adverse clinical effect on its health or welfare.

Hi Len!  Sounds like typical KC lip service; they're not actually prepared to do ANYTHING to prevent health problems, but they don't want it to be evident at their show/ s.

Now, had they accepted what "we" proposed, canine health would indeed, have been improved.

As to having ones dog vet checked... how much faith could you have in a KC appointed vet?

Another KC initiative with a bark bigger than its bite!! Have these vets got Xray eyes able to weed out those with HD or ED? What about the abilities required to check for eye problems such as PRA or any number of hereditary diseases in other breeds? Don't think so!!

So what exactly are these vets checking ? The only thing they could be checking of course, the JUDGES!!

Lennard a couple of days ago you started a thread asking if any further action had been taken re last years Crufts fiasco. Well guess you now have your answer, though not necessarily the one you expected! The KC have taken further action, they now intend to have VETS 'vet' the judges by checking out their BOB for soundness etc, beware those dogs with PROVEN HEALTH CHECKS they mean diddly squat to this KC regime. The KC would rather give their awards and stud book numbers to dogs with severe HD etc than to one their vet might consider has a little too much hind angulation or fails to cope with a slippery floor.

Not to worry, this years GSD judge is a KC member and I hear the BOB is already sorted, so our breed wont have to suffer the same fate as last years. (Oops, Hope Caroline remembers to inform Claire Baldwin and her Television Camera Crew)!!

From one who sees it and tells it as it is.

I would suggest that anyone deciding to enter this show makes sure that they take with them, to the show, every piece of paperwork evidence of their dogs hip score, elbow score etc etc.
That way, if any "would be" aspiring "controversy makers" decide to do what they did last year and denounce a dog as a cripple unfoundedly, or  tip out a pensioner and her dog, the scientific approved evidence of the dogs healthy hip/elbow status etc  can be argued, on site, let the tv camera crew take that on. Mo.

I seem to remember back in the early 90's the breed council asked the KC for a similar thing in that any GSD champion would have to have passed health tests before the KC gave them the title of Champion we know that this never came about, because again the KC were not interested in healthy dogs, just the one's that could make them money, i think this is a watered down version of this.

Problem is Mo you are never aware of which dogs the TV Camera Crew are targeting until you see it on the TV later. Remember last year the GSD wasn't discussed until the DAY AFTER the Pastoral Group had been judged.

Crufts never was a show designed to show off the best of our breeds attributes in the first place, then after the TV controversy of Crufts 2008 and again last year,  I cant imagine why any true German Shepherdite would want to grace the KC with a Crufts entry again. Remember what happened to the 2008 BOB winner,  then last years BOB winner, both FULLY HEALTH CHECKED GSD;S. So why on earth would anyone want to go anyway?  (with exception of the owners of this years guaranteed BOB winner of course).

Regards
Sue

Are there many GSD aficionados out there who have not got an excellent idea of who this years Crufts BOB winner is very likely to be?

It is becoming extremely difficult for GSD enthusiasts to continue exhibiting at Crufts or any KC Show.

Change the record.

So if you lot are not going to enter, then the judge will have less to choose from, so don't be surprised if he gives it to the best dog there from those entered.  You've got to be in it to win it.  Or is the truth that you lot can't show your dogs without doubling handling, or maybe even you are scared your dogs wouldn't pass the test if they did get BOB?  I haven't seen anywhere the judge making a statement on who is going to win - yet he is being slagged off before he even judges.  Go off and play at your own shows and leave those of us who wish to take our chances to do so.  I thought CC's didn't mean anything to you anyway?
