My 3 year old female is supposed to come into heat end of this month/early next month. she's lost her coat (fur was coming out in clumps) and my male has been following her and sniffing her these past couple of days. for the past 3 days she's been fussy about her food and only takes a few bites. other than that her behaviour has been normal.  so today i just checked her to see if she was in heat cos i didn't notice any blood drops and was just wondering. when i checked i saw a little bit of brown discharge and now i am worried cos i dont know if this is normal or not. she keeps licking herself so  thats another reason i didnt notice the discharge until i checked today. the discharge is a dark brown colour but it is not dropping all over the place. only if i squeeze slightly i notice the discharge coming out and then she licks herself immediately. her vagina is not swollen or anything.

i'm worried about her so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mav

I had a bitch that came into season just that way.  She blew her coat and that, along with swollen vulva,  was usually the only sign I saw.  She licked herself "clean" so much, there was NEVER any dripping or spotting on the carpet,  bed, floor, etc.  Some bitches are just like that.  Is she swollen?  The discharge starts out dark, changes to pink, then nearly clear with just a pnk "tinge."

I would not worry.  It all sounds par for the course to me.

thanks guys for the advise. I took her to the vet and the temp was normal. vet said it may be a slight infection but wasnt too sure so they did a test to check. will get the results tomorrow. but she did eat her dinner tonight just like her usual self which makes me feel a whole lot better. the weather is ridiculously hot where i live so i think maybe thats why she doesnt like to eat during the day.
oh and she's not swollen.
Thanks again, will keep you updated on what the vet says tomorrow.

My guess is that she is coming into heat, but it's good that you had her checked by the vet. Please keep us posted.
The best,
