if i were looking for a GSD -- the first thing is to identify what you want the dog for ... you stated proection .. but in my mind .. what KIND of protection ?? not all protectrion is alike !! e.g do you want a dog that is military , ersonbal protection . protection / [perimeter for business , protection to be watchful and engagein order  to protect children , ? house?.  a sport / dual purpose sport protection ?  i think thge word civil is extraoridanily to general  . IMO , myu explanation : i look for and talk about the inheritred genetic attributes both the dam and sire lines bring !! for example .. many police officers talk about civil work and one thread here alluded to work on prey vs defense.-- tjhose are just the motivations .. IMO i want to know the behavioral traits passed on . Such as .. arethe parents on a scale of q

"most civil gsds are still out there doing sport to become civil the dog needs to be turned on that way if the dog is not pushed into being civil u wont see that side of it depending on the dogs thresholds"

disagree.. I know plenty of dogs that are civil from the start. No need to bring it out at all..they just plain simple have it. You just have to train with it in mind.

I have owned many dogs in my life and in a personal dog I like a "civil" dog I owned 2 in my life that I really liked. 1 was a Greif vom Herkulesblick son he was hard, agressive, serious (civil). Not a dog for the masses but he was what I like. Mink was another one that produced civil dogs as well. I want a dog that brings on the fight not a dog that is stimulated  to fight. They do not make good sport dogs and you do not take them to the mall, but you still have your things in your truck or house when you get back. Some want to call them junk yard dogs or man eaters (whatever), but it trained correctly they can be a great animal in the end. No fear biters, sharp or brainless dogs just good old line West German working lines like Greif or Mink. I know there are some out there I have not found them, but am interested. I so not mind handler hard eather.

Paul.....you said, "no fear biters, sharp or brainless dogs....." what is your definition of sharp? What is the point of a civil PP dog if you can't take him places with you? To me what you are describing is a junk yard dog. Just to clarify you mean handler hard not to be confused with handler aggressive as that is a separate thing. Do you feel these are only really found in the West german lines?

gsd for the kinds of dog ur talking about what would make them become civil to another person?

i was told by joseff at eurosport my dog had extreme civil drive but shes a happy friendly dog unless someone comes near her fence or near my house that she doesnt know or if someone runs at her or eye stares her all hell breaks loose but shes still only 16 months but in public in crowds around stranges in pet stores shes calm and good with strangers petting her and friendly most of the time has like this dr jeckel mrs hide persona lol a happy dog that can turn serious in a second

but paul wants a dog that will hate strangers anywhere like a junkyard civl dog something that will take out anyone anywhere for whatever reason liability ?

I once had a dog exactly like Paul is describing.  He would not attack for no reason, however the reasons in his mind that he would attack for seemed to be minute.  There would not be any vocal warnings either.  No frear, just a solid and full bite.  It had to be a reason in the dogs mind worthy of biting, and he was not hugely tertoritially agressive.  Ance agitated there would be no beating him off of you  unless you knocked him out with a brick to the head or shot him dead (which wouldnt be a bad thing).  This dog honestly scared the S##t out of me, being that i was very new to working dogs at the time.  Now I would love to have this type of dog but would not know where to start looking.
