East West Feet - Page 1

I am posting this for a friend.

She recently bought a 3 month old puppy who looked perfectly normal. 3 weeks after purchase his front legs went east west. She is very worried now.
Why does this happen. This is getting more common now.
Is there a way to recify an east west problem

puppies go throught many differents stages, this may go away with time.

sometimes when the chest grows broad, the feet go back.

how bad is it, can you post some photos?

Pretty bad, the knuckles are almost touching the floor. Will get some photos and post.

Don't have the puppy too heavy, he may stand like this to stabilize his weight, maybe he has weak pasterns, this will improve with time and exercise.

Too young for the neutering impact but a lot of neutered dogs if done too early never have the chest spring out.

He is not nuetered nor is he heavy or fat for his structure.

I wonder if this is hereditary or something that happens for puppies and later fill out. My friend is really worried. She paid top price for him and the breeder says once sold is sold & its her responsibilty now as she choosed it.

a puppy in our SchH club went through what sounds like the exact same thing.

he was beautiful a 5 months then a week later his pasterns barley kept him up.

looking at him was painful.

he is now 7 months and back to being beautiful..

Yes, they do change a lot. I am sure he will improve and even if his feet stay slightly that way it is not a really serious fault.

Yes, it can be hereditary but tell your friend not to panic yet. Many puppies are east-west and do grow out of it. Just be sure the puppy gets good food and an appropriate amount of exercise. If the worry is the pup's stance in a showring, the handler can always place the feet, which won't hide down pasterns but will "fix" east - west. A little easty westy is not a huge deal.  Wait until the pup gets to be a year or so old and very likely the problem which seemed so large will have decreased considerably. Pups go through all sorts of odd growth stages and very seldom do you find one that is proportional and looks well built throughout puppyhood.
