Mals have too great a need for exercise and are too energetic, and they are more vocal, make more noise, than the GSD, which in turn is more vocal than Dobermans and Rotts.

I had considered the Mal, but rejected it.

Now, I much prefer the looks of a GSD.

Looks of your pet! A great deal of satisfaction from dog ownership is in the appearance of the dog, for most people.

A K9 officer and his mal visited our school.  The officer warned us before he brought the dog in that "a mal is like a gsd on crack."  The dog shook nonstop, even when the officer made him sit by his side.  The officer told us that our local department has mostly gsds (this was their only mal) and from what he said, it might be their last.  Too hyper.

I saw someone trapped in their car. Because of the economy, the dept sold their "jaws of life". Pry-bars, etc. weren't getting the job done, so I asked the k9 handler to get his malinois. We slipped his tug through a tiny hole in the door. We told the dog to "get it", and he stripped the car faster than Clyde from "every which way but loose". It was beautiful. We were so confident in Toco's ability, we told the wrecker driver that we were gonna let Toco drag the car back to the yard, and he did. All twenty miles. Since that day, Toco has stopped a flood, apprehended 2,431 felons, and balanced the city budget.

So you're basing your opinion on 1 police officer who got a dog that his department picked for him and that's your expert on the breed?  I'm guessing the dog was either French or Dutch.  Problem is I could almost guaranty you, the officer had no idea where the dog was from or what it's bloodlines were.  If it was from where I think it was, it's Dutch.  My dogs don't shake.  My dogs don't growl or chew on a grip.  My dogs "carry" the sleeve like crap but since I've never trialed where I was scored on the quality of the dog carrying prey in a circle, it's not a problem.  My dogs come like rockets on the escape and the long bite.  My dogs make me happy and that's what it's all about.  I don't care who likes them or who doesn't, I like them.  You don't like Malinois??  Don't get one, leave them alone,,,leaves more for me.

@Chaz,,,maybe we should get one for NOBama 'cuz he's done none -o- that stuff.  If in fact your friends dog balanced a city budget,,,,you may be on to something.

Hate to burst your bubble (not all LE love mals). The officer said they purchased the trained mal from Holland.  Never said I was an expert.  How about you quote some stats on mals replacing gsds in police departments and the military?  Show us some numbers to back your claims.

BTW, if you like mals so much then why are you here posting on a gsd forum?

See the difference is, I've owned Shepherds before, probably 15 or so both showline and working,,,,,sold them all.  None of them gave me what I get from my Malinois, so consequently I will never own one again.

As far as printable, here's one http://www.thelocal.de/society/20110822-37117.html

Recently I spoke with a well known International helper/competitor from Germany who has owned both breeds and he pretty much confirmed what was in that article.  The German Police are only allowed to spend 1500 Euros for the purchase of a dog COUNTRY WIDE.  Can you get a high quality working Malinois with less health issues that will work longer term for less than a German Shepherd?  Yes you can, but whose fault is that?

Good for you, but not everyone agrees.  The article only provides stats for that one state, not all of Europe.  I do not dislike mals because I love dogs in general.  I prefer gsds, but I would not go to the mal forum and make derogatory comments about the breed.  Prove your claims with some REAL stats that include countries world wide.

Don't shoot the messenger, I didn't start the post.  Being as the same post was started on the General Topic Message Board, isn't this somewhat of an extension?  If it means that much to you, I could just transfer my posts to that feature but would that change anything?  Maybe read Sunsilver's comments at the end, she's a Shepherd person but seems to be a practical one and understands that there is a problem.  Certainly the SV cares very little about the current or future condition of the breed and hiding your head in the sand does nothing.  The first step towards correcting a problem is admitting you have one.

Likewise; some hunters think that the German shorthair pointer is superior to the Lab.

I don't see the GSP replacing the Labs in the field, or even more so as pets.
