Shultz Anna

My 8 months old female GSD while chasing a wild cat jumped across a fence of barbed wire. In the bargain she got a small cut (1mm) on the shoulder blade. I have given the first aid and my vet is away for a week. Does she need some additional vaccination to avoid things like septic or the regular ones will take care of it?

She may need to be treated with antibiotics if she develops an infection. It's hard to say without seeing the wound, but some vets automatically treat the dog with antibiotics, depending on the type and the severity wound. Is it like a deep puncture wound? If so,  those are more prone to infection. How is she doing right now? What are you doing to treat the wound?

A 1mm cut should not cause you to worry. Your dog should be able to deal with that just fine. On your part, only keep an eye on it in case it should become infected, that means if it becomes swollen, hot and yellish oozing. Then its time for some antibiotic from the Vet.

Being or becoming septic is an occurance, not a disease, therefore no vaccine excists for it. Septicemia is caused by bacteria entering the blood stream, if not caught in time this will lead to organ failure and death. Symptoms become very quick severe with high fever and lethargy, and are treathed with strong intra venous antibiotics. Humans are more suspectible to this. In animals I have seen it only in combination with largy very deep wounds, infected utters, infected uterus, and sometimes hoof rot.

Thanks Starrchar & Elkoorr.
My girls seems to be doing well. The wound has started healing well and there is no change in here behaviour (normal as ever). In fact she hardly pays any attention to the wound.

Take her to the Vet.  Infection could be an issue.
