Paul,
Not sure if your comment was just in general or directed at my search for a Fero free dog?
Just the same, even though I may have been looking for a Fero free dog, it would still need to meet the rest of my strict criteria before I'd even consider it. I don't care what the pedigree is or is not on any dog, I won't settle for just any dog & especially not some BYB/POS one. Just saying :)

NorthwoodsGSD, can you share some of the dogs you've found? I'm sure there are folks who share your interest. Found a couple with only 1 Fero and no Tim/Troll but have not found any Fero-free.

That was not directed at you in anyway.  If I am looking for a great protection dog I really do not care how it's bred, BUT if I even think I might want to breed this dog and any point, pedigree is just as important as the animal it self. 1 dog is just 1 dog, but breed it just once you may start a whole gene pool.

Here is another Fero free dog, I especially like this one:  Wink Smile

Yes, and he's rather local to me, too. ;)

But he's (1) Czech and (2) not available at public stud, afaik?

Re: Screaming -- it does not come just from, or even mainly from, Fero--although it definitely was one of the traits that came with his drive--but it wasn't universal in his kids.

My Yoschy g-daughter has Ilja and Arek Stoffelblick on the bottom, Yoschy on top--and she brought great calmness and ability to relax in the house to her pups. I got major screaming from my first working female (born in 1994)--and I was told that it came down from Donn vom Dreidörfereck.

"I got major screaming from my first working female (born in 1994)"

<LOL> In addition to recollection of her opening a picnic cooler after she watched you place a ball inside it, another memory of Frost that has stuck over the years is her reaction when she heard you say "Squirrel!"  Yeah, I think 'screaming' would best describe that sound...

Ha. That's exactly who I'm talking about. She SCREAMED. About everything. And, yes, saying, "Squirrel" inside the house would make her scream and run to the door (and scream) and if I opened the door, she'd run to the nearest tree (screaming) and check for squirrels.

Tons of drive, easy to train, wicked smart, super high hunt and ball drive--no Fero--and very screamy: http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/dog.html?id=473046

Well Christine you bring up good point. Sometimes it is difficult to explain the depth of your(my) thought process when making a general statement. There are of course dogs with Fero or derivatives of Fero that do not scream. If Fero or derivatives is in pedigree in which drives are more balanced, or in which other dogs are are linebred in the pedigree decreasing the influence, or through some sons that were not built up for more sport type. Dogs through Timmy tend to show this traitt less than Troll, but if you linebreed on Timmy it can creep in along with other specific Timmy strengths. Some Troll sons were known for producing a somewhat more civil dog than most Troll progeny, I mean there are so many variations of these combinations. The thing is that the sport world has followed the show world into breeding to titles and winners.....therefore the more is better dog breeding philosophy has become rampart. As such certain traits have become almost inherent on the sport field like the show field. So traits in drive or color, have now become precursor to success in these places. Now I am sure there are 8 of you out there that have the exception to this,...lol, but if there are 28 occurrences for your 8 exceptions, then a reasonable person would say the 28 are more representative of what is than the louder exceptions.
