Someone posted a video of him on Facebook, and I am wondering what the big deal was with this dog? A video of his brother Troll was also posted, and he looked signifigantly better, though still not what I would have expected to see from such popular dogs.

I am a newbie yet, so can someone explain what all the hype was about?

what more proof you need for how good they were..........video shows 2 pretty awesome GSD's, don't you think?

I have never really cared for either one or their father. Just trial dogs.

Timmy was owned & bred by Roman Schuler. He was very well respected & liked. Also owned Askia vom Froschgraben and competed her. Roman was one of the best but look at all the dog back then they are not to levels of dogs & training now.

one could argue that you've witnessed pronounced aggression, fight, and courage, excellent ground speed and, for the era and level of aggression displayed, outstanding control. out of curiosity, what dogs/performances are you using for comparison and which aspects of the routines struck you as underwhelming?

Sometimes what all the hype is about can't really be judged from a video.

To me, Schutzhund and the things it shows are only one aspect of the GSD... I'm not saying they are bad dogs, I just expected a lot more for dogs who are as popular as they are, being bred to back then, as well as being linebred on now. However, what really would have concerned me, is the fact that Timmy looked ready to bolt at any wrong move by the helper (seen fairly early on in the video). To me, he looked very nervous and unsure. I understand that this was nearly 30 years ago, but surely this reaction was not something that was favorable? After seeing a performance like that, I do not believe I would want a pup from him, nor would I want to breed a bitch to him either. I know Troll was bred a lot more than he was. I also have heard that the Timmy and Troll lines cross well together, but it seems like the only threads I can find on what they produce turn in to pissing matches on who was the better of the two.

Hey, you know those pups you met at my house that you liked? Linebred 4-5 on that litter. ;-)  Just sayin'...

troll is a great dog in my eyes, the sire to yoschy whom is in allot of top produced dogs - another great dog in my opinion.

My Beckett has Timmy in his 5th generation on Gabi's side, I wouldn't say he's nervous, but he is drivey! Supposedly Timmy is where his screaming tendency comes from, lol! He eager to please, needs a strong handler on the field, but he's a sweetheart at home. He looks a lot like Timmy from pictures I've seen, but he's an Arolser Holz, classic sable. He's an old man now, built like a freaking tank. Despite the numerous issues we had learning together, he's a good boy; I wouldn't trade him for the world! jackie harris
