I may be in the minority but I/m not looking for extreme drives in a GSD. I prefer an AKC type obedience, not wraped around the front of by body and constantly bouncing up in my fsce. over the top prey is no fun for me and usually requires bringing out the EC for control off leash. I have no problem finding my preffered level of prey and even hunt in the s/l. what is more diffulcult is some degree of civil and the ability to handle pressure.

as for vegas, I think he produced quite a few good moving conformation dogs, some who could have done well in AKC. there was a tendency for over done rears if not taken into account, but the next perfect stud dog will be the first. jmo.

A few years ago there was a thread where some of the better examples of dogs that produced working ability in the conformation lines were discussed. Once you know what you're looking for, it's pretty easy.

Here's a link to the old thread if anyone is interested:

http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/forum.read?mnr=481467-top-showlines-with-good-protection-phase

Those dogs are obviously a little further back in the pedigree now. We were about to add dogs from Enzo Buchorn to the list. Enough time has passed where we can add him to the list. It's looking like Yello St. Michaels Berg is his best producer.

Decent working abilities in the conformation lines is not that difficult to find. You just have to go to the breeders that breed with an eye on working ability. Finding the training environment where a good showline can prosper is more difficult. There just aren't that many people that want to work a showline and not that many that will/can take the time to work/train them properly.

I fully understand that drive and workability is a matter of how a dog is raised and trained. More examples of breeders that do a good job at this are welcome.

@Dog1 thanks very much for the link! great post.

Also thanks to everyone else who contributed to the topic in a constructive manner.

It used to be fairly common place for  VA rated dogs to be seen in the pedigrees of  top working dogs in the 1960,s that were bred in Germany and even into the 70,s but it would be almost unheard of in modern times for that to happen, its a shame but thats how its developed over the years.

I think that's what people refer to when they talk of the "split" in the breed. Back far enough in a ped the same were "WL" AND "SL", in fact it was meaningless to distinguish the two.

Randy, this is a great thread. Thanks for resurecting it.  I've read about half of it and plan to finish up later. It made me miss our regular showline discussions and posters like you, Leotta, Kevin, Ravi, Jagenstadt, Molly, Debby, Carlos and Robin,  Heidi et al.  Thankfully Ibrahim and VK are still posting. Wouldn't it be fun if we could get it all going again? We have a forum to do it. Any interest, anyone? I know most SL people don't post here anymore but maybe they still read here?

Nice post, Sporter. FWIW, I agree 100%.

There is the general feeling that SL dogs has caused Schutzund titles  to loose their value.

A general feeling by whom?
