It's second hand but I have heard many positive comments on Cary.

Appreciate Dog1 comments. I doubt anyone commenting on this thread other than maybe susie having more experience with s/l.

I do like the protection ratings, but a 5/5 should be a starting point if that's what one is looking for. the bitch counts also. in the end, if you want a pup with the potential to exceed the medicore expectations of the s/l, you are going to have to see it first hand as well as have an understanding of what you are seeing.

I believe Cary's son, Ando, was also a well respected showline.

Joan whats wrong with Hans? I said he posted a vid of bitework at a recent Seiger Show ( on  Alpine K9 forum ). The dogs lacked any kind of powe and most of them showed avoidance and   un certainty upon approaching the decoy. If I was introduced to GSD via this vid, I would not want one. My first inbtroduction was to a  a Marko ( 72 ) Seiger grandon, through Kai V Silberbrand. That dog had one of the best hunt drives I have seen in a GSD. In searching for a dime in the bushes, he was like someone who  had become possessed by something ( very very intense, you could hear branches snapping as he searched ). I alos mention  that during the 80s , Marko's line was not much promnoted. ere

Hans if youre out there, can you post that link again on here?

Mithuna, I don't know what is or is not wrong with him, just who cares what he put on his site?
That video was put on this site before, all it does is stir shit. Nobody NEEDS that video on here. We've been through it already.

Was the video genuine or not? Does it sample the top SL dogs? Like I mentioned, if I was introduced to GSD through that video I would not want one. Luckily, I was able to see a Marko grandson.

glad people can find individual examples of sl dogs that bite hard and have good hunt drive even if some dogs are long gone.

this is a great long list or a desperately short one depending how you look at it.

When we talk about prey drive and hard biting s/l dogs we never mention many of the V rated dogs where there are many who come up to scratch. The emphasis is always on the VA group where one would think the absolute best dogs should be. Sadly they are not. Lets be honest, there are many VA dogs who have achieved the top status not because they consistently produce the top progeny or maintain all the traits of the breed but for other reasons. Over the years I have seen many of these dogs produce absolutely nothing at all.

Of course not all of the s/l dogs will satisfy everyone but, also, many dogs on the working side fail just as miserably and, this is just not always due to the bloodlines behind them. People forget the human factor which does not always come up to scratch either.

Mackenzie what show line breeders or lines would you go to in order to seek police dogs or bomb detection dogs for use on the battle field currently, not asking if you can name some sl dogs that have done these tasks but who would be your go to breeders/lines if tax payers were paying you to source such dogs in a hurry cos allied soldiers and cops lives depended on it now.

hypothetical I know but you have had what 30 years in the breed, you should have such knowledge. I am on my first gsd and I know exactly where I would look and not look.

vk - at this moment in time I cannot say off of the top of my head who or where I would go to find the dogs that you mention mainly because I do not go to Germany so much as I used to.  If I were to look now I certainly would not be in a hurry to pick a out a dog.  If I did find such an animal I would like to see it working more than once or twice depending on the purpose that it was going to be used for.  Videos are out full stop. Especially if as you say people's lives depended on the dog.   If I found a dog to fit your criteria the bloodlines are not so important for that kind of work.  The criteria for me would be that the dog must be capable of doing that type of work at an above average level whenever called upon.  The matter of aggression can be at a much higher level than show line or even sport level because of the dangers that will face this type of dog provided their is absolute control by the handler and, where possible, not multi handled.  The dog should be anatomically correct or as near as possible to allow long periods of work and high levels of stamina together with good hips and elbows absolutely sound and not overangulated.  Size is important because correct size works quicker than oversized animals.

In selection for s/l dogs and their work ability I would look for animals showing  SchH 2 and better.  I would also apply the same rules for looking at these dogs.   The criteria here changes from the dogs that are of more interest to you.

I am going to a Landesgruppen show at Bellheim, Germany  next weekend so perhaps I can find out more and if so I will post again.
