Going back to the 70s and 80s. And many thanks to all who contributed. My sense for now about the American bred SchH dogs of these bygone days:

They are still in some pedigrees, but often in combination with not only imported dogs but mostly with American pet and show lines, sometimes a combination of all of these and more.

Aside from Trommer kennels I haven't yet learned of other breeders who crossed these sound American dogs with imports. That would have been the way to keep these dogs in the population of sports and/or working dogs. This looks like a choice, and I haven't yet been convinced of a necessity to not use these dogs anymore. The number of these dogs was likely small, so no staying within that gene pool. Most American breeders have always imported dogs and crossed them with their own. It was a road not taken with these early American bred SchH dogs.

It could be that, as the ASL became more and more extreme in conformation and as the temperament of ASL dogs became softer and softer, that it became uncool to have an American bred dog with American lines at all, even if it wasn't a show dog, even if the dog was sound.

Since SchH changed (I trained in the 70s in Europe, no hearsay on my end), the competition dogs changed too, as we know. Maybe these dogs, like others, weren't s suitable for the new styles? Idk.

A member brought up USCA's SchH3 Club which goes back to 1971: http://www.germanshepherddog.com/about/schh3/
It lists the dogs and their handlers. If we post these, either in this or in a new thread, perhaps some would remember a dog or two, and a handler or two.
