One final note if I may - exceptions to the rule. I stated above that pedigree determines whether a dog is a show line or working line and while that is true what is not true is that it determines whether the dog in question is a working dog or not. Breeding is all about slelection and some show line breeders have co-selected for working traits and drives and some supposed working line breeders do not pay enough attention to the drives needed to work or the right combination of drives and traits needed to effectively work (pack drive, obedience drive etc).

So you CAN have show dogs that work and working dogs that don't or who are so unclear in the head or frenetic they can not effectively work.

If you refer back up the thread to my first post and the link to Remy you will see that her sire was pure showlines. He also was a KNVP titled dog who qualified met lof AND he was national tracking champion in three countries. So while his pedigree says show lines this was a working dog and one that produced working dogs - Remy and her brother a police dog. I showed Remy at our 2010 regionals where she did a spectacular free track, retrieving the object back to me since she retrieved to me everyday as my service dog and then going back to tracking all on her own. She also did a crowd favorite protection routine. My two favorite comments of the day were 1. a spectator overheard during phase C to say "I bet no one ever tries to take that lady's crutches away from her (at the time I walked w/ a great difficulty and arm crutches) and 2. from the judge - when informed Remy was a "half" breed ( show/working cross) he said that what he saw on the field that day was a serious powerful working dog.

So the point to remember regardless what the pedigree "says" about your dog, it is up to you to find his/her talents and loves and develop them as fully as you can whether that be in schutzhund, herding, tracking, obedience or service work such as SAR, police or assistance dog (guide, hearing, service).  The working abilities of our dogs  are essential to the definition of the German Shepherd breed. It is our job as stewards of the breed to make sure they are not lost.

TIG,
I really enjoyed reading your articles.
I breed selected working bloodlines, with my show lines to improve the drives.
Hoping to get the best of both worlds.

I find many new to the breed tend to get confused,
with all the talk about show and working lines.
I totally agree with your comments on the drives and working ability of Show and Working lines.
I feel that if we,selected for Temperament,Character,Structure, Soundness and Drives it will be less confusing.
Once again thank you for sharing.

I get annoyed with breeders that produce "working lines" without any proof of their working ability. Was at a regional SV show a few months back and a breeder who produces both lines was sitting with one of her prized WL dogs and talking to the dog about how the dog we were showing represents "her kind." I really wanted to tell her that her dog isn't a working dog, it never will be as the dam line hasn't been titled in generations. It diminishes what many people do when you call anything that's not a black/red or ASL a working line. Just because 2, 3, 4, 5 generations ago the dog has working lines in it, doesn't make the current one a working dog.

There are basically five male blood lines. You go backwards on  pedigree from your dog to his sire to  male to male  until you arrive to the founder of the bloodline. First dog from the dog's below  you arrive to is the founder of the blodline.

1st male blood line : Hektor Schwaben

2 Hettel v Uckermark

3 Klodo v Boxberg

4 Utz vHouse Schutting

5 Rolf Osnabruckerland More details here >

I hope it is OK to post this link
