A list of actual quality straight back breeders would be a good idea. Maybe even stop people from getting scammed with poor unhealthy dogs.

My girl Sasha is a solid black (with tan bleed through), straight back GSD, but is sadly on the big boned side: http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/dog.html?id=1845819-custos-dark-lady-sasha-von-beckefeld My male however was a slightly sloped back, red and black saddle sable and was put to sleep last year at age 7: http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/dog.html?id=625199-noble-samurai-von-haus-beckefeld You can tell in the photo that his hips were giving out, that was taken in 2015. Me and my family stopped taking photos after that, as we knew he was going to get even worse, and we wanted to remember him as he once was. He had hip dysplasia so bad he was no longer able to walk and had stopped eating as well, so we knew it was time to end his suffering, and he was suffering not being able to walk as he stopped wanting to eat. Turns out the kennel his father came from was breeding dogs of very poor health, and he took the most after his sire sadly. His mother was a straight back, either silver or cream with black sable and had no health problems at all. :/ And so far this is one of the few modern GSDs that I have found, that looks anything like the first original breed standard for German Shepherd Dogs: http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/dog.html?id=621256-fora-iz-legendarnogo-forvarda I'd kill to have a dog like her. And the funny thing is that she takes after neither of her parents or grandparents in her build. So it must have come from farther back in her bloodlines.

How about starting with a correct definition of "straight back", and clearing up that a "sloped back" does not mean the dog is dysplastic?

77lbs., OFA Good/Normal, SV "a" normal H&E, 2x IPO3, "straight back" per SV koermeister during his koerung.

I would never buy from Pioneer. They clearly have used another do to increase the size of the breed. Probably the Sarplaninac Dog, which makes sense because of the coloring.

As I said, I have found two in the U.S. and several in Germany that are breeding the original GSD. Are all of you too young to remember what the GSD used to look like? Go on to youtube and look up Run Joe Run. This was a Saturday morning tv show that aired when I was a kid. You'll only find the opening sequence but it is enough to show you what the GSD looked like before AKC and their beauty pageant screwed up this remarkable dog. A show dog wouldn't be able to film that opening sequence. Before you even see a side profile of the dog in that tv series you can tell he's something special. The dogs I remember didn't look like Dracula's assistant. Now I see Police and Military going with the Malinois, which is a poor replacement. Why? You know why. The Mal hasn't been disfigured yet.

Size is not a hard thing to breed for in any breed.

I'm too young to "remember"...you couldn't pay me to own one of the old ones, though. Only thing I probably would have liked is temperament.

Structurally? Blegh.

I constantly hear from "old timers" that they fell in love with the breed because of Rin Tin Tin. I looked him up when I was first getting into the breed and was not enamored.

And you couldn't pay me to buy one of those distorted GSD that go in the show ring. If I get a GSD I want one that I can go outside and play with for two hours or more. Or a dog that will enjoy hiking with me and my boys on a five mile hiking trail. Those horrible dogs that the AKC has created would be lucky if they can do a mile before tiring. And don't even get me started on the vet bills. Yeah, I think you missed out. I encourage you to go on youtube and look up the opening video for a 70's kid show that I fondly remember. It was called Run Joe Run. The dog in that show is a straight backed GSD. Now tell me why you have a problem with SB GSDs after watching this? Mind you, I'm not speaking of Shiloh or Pioneer. I don't want something that looks like a monster GSD. I just want a healthy, straight-backed GSD that can age gracefully with me and my family and enjoy running and playing up till it's time for him to close his eyes one last time.

I really like this photo all of the same dog which shows just how different a stack can make a dog look. @GSDFanboy,I'd suggest you start talking about looking for a "moderate" dog. You will alienate many a breeder by saying you want "straight backs" and, as already pointed out, that's not really what you are looking for as many of the most extreme ASL GSDs have perfectly straight backs.
