Hello! I’m interested in importing several titled adult West German Showlines over from Germany into the United States, and I’m wondering if I could get some feedback here on who may be the most reputable person to get in contact with. Thanks!

If you search on "brokers" as a topic here, you'll find some recent discussion about the benefits of using a broker, vs reaching out across the pond to a stranger. I am not a broker, btw, but have talked with individual breeders for the same reasons you stated in your 'Original' post. I have the same concerns still, even after good direct communications with non-USA breeders. Ultimately, I think I will use a broker, if I can't find my next dog here in the USA.

I saw an old post you had from 10.5 years ago, where you had an apparent bad experience with importing a dog. There's a top guy in North Carolina that imports and trains dogs of all types. I don't know him, don't work for him and I'm not him - so I'm not endorsing anything. But, I am considering him for the future, even though the trade-off is price. Depending on the economy, the cost of a dog will likely be 50% higher than what the dog is actually worth. But, US breeders are all over the place and many are extreme. I read here just the other day of a Texas kennel closing, and they had the nerve to state "no tire kickers" referring to price of the dogs. Even while going out of business, some people find a way of deterring buyers. My thought was if the dogs were worth the costs he's asking, he wouldn't be going out of business. I'm pretty much over those kind of breeders.

Hi, last I talked to Lino Calvo of Von Calvo, he owned several dogs, both in the U.S. and Germany. He seemed straight forward and honest. He is also into showing. I am sure that he would be able to handle a transaction for you.

Günbil German Shepherds is also another kennel / importer here in the U.S.. They buy, import, and resell dogs and pups all the time. They also have a kennel in Germany.

Both of these kennels have websites. Von Calvo does not update his very often. But he will answer the phone if you give him a call.

Good luck.

I have imported both pups and adults. It is not an obscure science. Biggest hurdle in importing adults is that domestic flights can't/won't accommodate 700 series dog crates, so you may have to drive to DFW, or O'Hare, or whateverer airport they can ship it into to collect your dog. Other than that, it requires some communication, but the medical clearances are paid by the breeder and the pickup is handled by the shipper you hire.

As to who to contact, do you mean shipper, breeder, or what? If you PM me, I'll gladly give you my viewpoint and share what I know. The only way to make GSD's as popular as they were, is by working together.
